Heating

Heating That Fits Your Home.

Furnaces, boilers and heat pumps: repair, replacement and installs sized by measurement, so every room is warm and the equipment is not working harder than it should.

This page explains what Castle Comfort does for heating: repair, replacement and new installs for furnaces, boilers and heat pumps. You will see what each service covers, three honest ways to heat a Chicago-area home with what each one gains and costs, and answers to the questions people ask most. The aim is that you know your options before you call.

What It Covers

What Heating Covers.

  • Furnace Repair and Replacement.

Gas furnaces diagnosed honestly first, and replaced only when that is the better choice.

  • Boiler Service and Replacement.

Hot-water heating, checked and maintained, or replaced with the right size.

  • Heat Pumps, Including Cold-Climate Models.

Chosen and sized for Chicago winters, with an honest look at whether one fits your home.

  • Right-Sized Replacements.

A room-by-room load calculation before any equipment is chosen, never a guess from the old unit or the square footage.

  • Safety Checks on Gas Equipment.

Venting and carbon monoxide testing as part of the work.

  • Thermostats and Controls.

Set up so the equipment runs the way it was designed to.

Your Options

Three Honest Ways to Heat.

There is no single right answer. The best fit depends on your home, your ducts and what you want from the system.

  • Gas Furnace With Central Air Conditioning.

    What You Gain

    • Strong, familiar heat on the coldest days
    • Often the simplest replacement when the ducts and gas line are already in good shape

    What It Costs

    • Burns gas in the home, so it needs proper venting and a yearly safety check
    • Cooling comes from a separate air conditioner

Best When: the home already has gas and sound ducts, and you want a straightforward replacement.

  • Dual-Fuel Heat Pump and Furnace.

    What You Gain

    • The heat pump does the work in mild weather, the furnace steps in on the coldest days
    • One system for heating and cooling

    What It Costs

    • Two pieces of equipment to look after
    • The controls have to be set up properly to switch at the right time

Best When: you want to use less gas but keep gas heat as insurance for deep winter.

  • Cold-Climate Heat Pump.

    What You Gain

    • One electric system heats and cools, with no combustion in the home
    • Modern cold-climate models are built to keep working in very cold weather

    What It Costs

    • Needs careful sizing and good ducts; some homes need a backup for the coldest days
    • Running cost depends on today’s gas and electric prices, which change

Best When: the home is well sealed and ducted, or you are moving away from gas.

Questions

Questions People Ask.

My Furnace Stopped Working. What Should I Do First?

If you smell gas, or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Otherwise, call us any time and we will walk you through what to check and send help.

How Often Should a Furnace Be Serviced?

At least once a year, before the heating season. Heating and cooling are checked separately, because they are different equipment.

How Long Will a New Furnace Last?

It depends on the equipment, how well it is installed and how well it is looked after. We do not promise a number, but a correctly sized system with yearly care tends to last longer than one that is not.

Are There Rebates?

Utility rebates change every year. We tell you what applies to your address when we quote the work.

What We’d Tell a Friend

If your furnace can be repaired, we will tell you so, even when a replacement would be the bigger job.

If it is time to replace it, we will show you why, and we will measure your home to find the size it actually needs. That is not always the size of the unit that was there before.
