What to Expect
Cooling, Step by Step.
A hot home is hard to live in, and it rarely waits for a convenient time. Here is how I work, so you know what is coming.
This page walks through what happens when you call me about cooling, in order. You will see what helps me before I arrive, how the work goes, what you will notice at home and the different ways we can solve the same problem, so you can choose what matters most to you.
Before We Start
What Helps Me, Before I Arrive.
Tell Me What the Home Feels Like.
Not cool enough, cool but sticky, one room worse than the others, or nothing at all? Each points to a different cause.
Clear the Way to the Outdoor Unit.
Plants or stored items around the unit slow me down. A clear few feet around it helps.
Keep Pets and Children Clear.
Outdoor units and indoor coils are not places for curious hands. I will tell you when I am done.
Share Your Thermostat Settings.
A photo of the display, or what it is set to, saves time.
The Steps
What to Expect.
I Tell You Honest Timing.
In a heat wave there can be a wait. I tell you where you are in line, and where I can, I help you through it. I have lent my own portable air conditioners to clients who were waiting.
How Long
Ask me when you call.
I Find the Cause.
I measure the airflow, the temperature drop across the system, the refrigerant pressures and the electrical parts. If the problem is something simple, I tell you, and I do not make it sound bigger.
You Hear Your Options.
A repair, a repair with a plan, or a replacement. If the answer is a replacement, I explain what size your home actually needs. A bigger unit is not a better one: it can cool quickly, shut off, and leave the air damp.
I Do the Work.
Repairs are often done during the visit. A replacement is scheduled with you. The outdoor unit, the indoor coil and the refrigerant lines are handled with care, and new systems use newer refrigerants, which I will explain.
How Long
Ask me about your job. A replacement is often a day or two.
I Measure It Before I Leave.
Airflow, temperature drop and refrigerant levels are checked and written down, so the system is proven to be working as designed.
I Explain It.
What I did, why, what to expect on the next hot day, and when I would like to see it again.
Living With It
What You Will Notice.
- Heat While It Is Off.
- The system is off while I work, so the home warms up.
- What I Will Do: I keep that time as short as I can, and I tell you in advance.
- Noise Outside and Inside.
- Tools, a vacuum pump and some banging.
- What I Will Do: I keep the noisy work brief and as contained as I can.
- Some Mess.
- Tools, hoses and old parts pass through the home and the work area.
- What I Will Do: Floors are protected and I clean as I go. Your home should be as I found it.
- Your Day.
- A visit can cut across remote work, naps and pets.
- What I Will Do: I work around what the household needs, and we plan the visit together.
Your Choices
You Choose What Matters Most.
Cooling decisions are about more than price. Here is what each priority leads to.
If Time Matters Most
Get You Cool Soon.
A repair now if parts are available. If not, I help you through the wait.
The Tradeoffs: If the system is old or oversized, a fast fix may not last, and I will say so.
If Budget Matters Most
Spend as Little as Makes Sense.
I repair what failed and tell you what is likely to need attention, so you can plan.
The Tradeoffs: You may face another repair later. We decide together when replacing becomes smarter.
If the Result Matters Most
Make It Comfortable, Not Just Cold.
A properly sized system that runs long and steady enough to take the moisture out of the air, with the ducts checked.
The Tradeoffs: More cost today and more planning time, in return for steadier comfort.
Afterward
When We Are Done.
It Is Written Down.
The work, the measurements, the price and the warranty, in writing.
A Check-In.
I follow up after the first hot stretch to make sure it is doing what we expected.
A Yearly Visit, if You Like.
A spring visit catches small problems before the first hot week. It is optional, and I will explain what it does.
On Every Job
What I Promise, Whatever We Choose.
A Written Price Before Work Starts.
You will know what is included and what it costs before I begin. If something changes while I am working, I stop, call you, and explain before anything else happens.
Every Option, With Its Cost.
Time, money and the result are all real costs. I show you what each choice trades, so you decide with the full picture.
An Honest Answer, Even “No.”
If a repair is enough, I will say so. If nothing is needed, I will say that too.
What I Would Do at Home.
If you ask, I will tell you what I would choose for my own family, and why.
Care for Your Home and Family.
Floors protected, work areas kept tidy, and the day planned around the household that lives there.
A Note From David
Cooling problems tend to arrive on the hottest day, when everyone else needs help too. I will tell you honestly where you are in line and what I can do while you wait.
And when we are choosing a new system, I care about more than the temperature. A home that is cool but clammy is not comfortable, so I measure for humidity as well.
Questions
Questions People Ask.
Why Is My Home Cold but Sticky?
Often the air conditioner is too large for the home, or the airflow is off. The unit cools quickly and shuts off before it removes the moisture. I measure to find out which it is.
Will You Recommend the Biggest Unit?
No. I recommend the size your home needs, based on measurement. Bigger is not better.
Do You Work on Any Brand?
Yes. I am not tied to one manufacturer.
What Will It Cost?
You get a written price before I begin, with every option explained.
Ready to Talk It Through?
A consultation is a conversation about how your home is behaving, not a sales pitch.
