What to Expect
Energy & Comfort Assessments, Step by Step.
An assessment is a close look and an honest conversation. You decide what happens afterward, and “nothing” is a real answer.
This page walks through an assessment, in order. You will see what helps me before I arrive, how the visit goes, what you will notice at home or at work and the different places an assessment can lead, so you can choose what matters most to you.
Before We Start
What Helps Me, Before I Arrive.
Tell Me What Bothers You.
Which rooms, at what times of day, in which season. A list is perfect.
Share a Year of Energy Bills.
They show me the pattern of how the home uses energy. If they are hard to find, we will manage without.
Show Me Where the Equipment Is.
The furnace, the air conditioner, the thermostats, and any access to the attic, crawl space or basement.
Tell Me Anything Else.
Who lives there, anyone who runs hot or cold, a recent renovation, equipment age, past repairs.
The Steps
What to Expect.
We Talk First.
I listen to what you notice and what you would like to change. I do not recommend anything yet.
How Long
A conversation. Ask me for the length of the whole visit.
I Look Around.
Room by room, and then the equipment, the ducts and the controls. I note what I see, and I ask questions as I go.
I Measure What Matters.
The airflow, the pressure the blower works against, the temperatures and humidity in different rooms, and, for gas equipment, the safety and carbon monoxide checks. Measurements, not guesses.
You Get a Written Summary.
What I found, in plain words and in order of what matters most, with your options and what each costs in time, money and result. It also says what happens if you do nothing, so you can weigh it.
We Talk, and You Decide.
There is no obligation. The options run from nothing at all, to a tune-up, to a repair, to a targeted upgrade, to a replacement or a new design. I tell you what I would do, and why.
I Do the Work You Choose.
You get a written scope and price first. I can often start soon, or schedule it for a time that suits your household. If you would rather take the summary to someone else, it is yours to keep.
Living With It
What You Will Notice.
- Low Disruption.
- Mostly time near the equipment and in a few rooms.
- What I Will Do: I stay in the rooms and spaces I need, and I keep it quiet and clean: no dust, and very little noise.
- Access to Some Tight Spaces.
- I may need to get into the attic, the basement or a crawl space.
- What I Will Do: I tell you before I do.
- The System Briefly Off.
- A few checks need the system off.
- What I Will Do: I tell you when, and I turn it back on as soon as the check is done.
- You Can Go About Your Day.
- A visit does not need you to stay with me the whole time.
- What I Will Do: I explain what I find at the start and at the end, and in between I get on with it.
Your Choices
You Choose What Matters Most.
The summary shows your options. Here is how each priority leads somewhere different.
If Time Matters Most
Fix the One Thing, Quickly.
If the problem is one part or a setting, I handle it during the visit where I can, or book it for the earliest time.
The Tradeoffs: A quick fix may not address wider comfort or efficiency, and I will tell you what it leaves.
If Budget Matters Most
Start Where It Helps Most.
The summary lists the options in the order of what helps most for the cost, so you can start small and stop whenever you like.
The Tradeoffs: I cannot promise a saving, because it depends on the home. I can promise honest numbers.
If the Result Matters Most
See the Whole Picture.
A fuller plan: the upgrades in order, and the point at which a replacement or a new design makes sense, so you can phase the work.
The Tradeoffs: More cost and more time overall, in return for a plan you can follow.
Afterward
When We Are Done.
A Summary You Can Keep.
Your options, in order, in plain words. It is yours whether or not we work together.
A Follow-Up.
I check in a few days later to see whether you have questions.
A Way to Keep It Healthy.
A yearly check is a small assessment. The Castle Care Plan covers it, and it is optional.
On Every Job
What I Promise, Whatever We Choose.
A Written Price Before Work Starts.
You will know what is included and what it costs before I begin. If something changes while I am working, I stop, call you, and explain before anything else happens.
Every Option, With Its Cost.
Time, money and the result are all real costs. I show you what each choice trades, so you decide with the full picture.
An Honest Answer, Even “No.”
If a repair is enough, I will say so. If nothing is needed, I will say that too.
What I Would Do at Home.
If you ask, I will tell you what I would choose for my own family, and why.
Care for Your Home and Family.
Floors protected, work areas kept tidy, and the day planned around the household that lives there.
A Note From David
Most people book an assessment because something is bothering them: a room that never feels right, a bill that seems high, equipment that is getting older, or simply wanting to know where things stand.
I will measure, explain what I find in plain words, and give you your options. I will not pressure you toward any of them. A repair is one of the options, and so is doing nothing.
Questions
Questions People Ask.
Is the Assessment Free?
I tell you what it costs before I come, and whether it is credited toward any work you choose.
Will It Lower My Bills?
I do not promise a number, because it depends on the home. I promise measurements, honest findings and a written list in order.
Is This a Certified Energy Audit?
It is an assessment of your heating and cooling and how the home performs, with measurements. If you need a certified audit, I will say so and can bring in someone who holds that credential.
What Do You Not Cover?
Insulation, windows and air sealing are outside what I do. If they look like the real problem, I will tell you and point you to someone who can help.
Ready to Talk It Through?
A consultation is a conversation about how your home is behaving, not a sales pitch.
