What to Expect
Heating, Step by Step.
Whether your furnace stopped last night or you are planning ahead, this is how I work, what you will notice, and where the decisions are yours.
This page walks through what happens when you call me about heating, in order. You will see what helps me before I arrive, how the work goes, what you will notice at home and the different ways we can solve the same problem, so you can choose what matters most to you.
Before We Start
What Helps Me, Before I Arrive.
Tell Me What You Have Noticed.
When it started, any noises or smells, which rooms are cold. The more you tell me, the faster I find the cause.
Clear a Path to the Equipment.
Furnace or boiler areas are often tight. If you can clear the way and keep pets safely out of it, I will be quicker and careful.
Be Home to Talk It Through.
You do not need to follow me around. I do want to explain what I find, and to ask you before I do anything that costs money.
Safety Comes First.
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home, call 911 or your gas utility from outside, and then call me.
The Steps
What to Expect.
I Take Your Call.
I ask a few questions so I understand what is happening and that everyone is safe. If it is an emergency, I tell you honestly how long it will take me to get there.
What I May Ask of You
The age of the equipment, if you know it, and anything you have noticed.
How Long
Ask me when you call. It depends on the hour and how many calls are ahead of yours.
I Find What Is Wrong.
Before I suggest anything, I test and look. I check the safety controls, the airflow and the parts that usually fail, and I show you what I find if you would like to see it.
You Hear Your Options.
Often there is more than one good answer: repair it, repair it and plan for what is likely to come next, or replace it. I tell you what each costs, in dollars, in time and in the result you can expect, and what I would do. Then it is your call.
I Do the Work.
Many repairs are finished during the visit when I have the part. If a part has to be ordered, I tell you straight away, and I will help you stay as warm as I can in the meantime. A replacement is planned with you for a day that suits the household.
How Long
Many furnace replacements finish in a single day. If yours will take longer, I will tell you before I start.
I Test It Before I Leave.
I do not call a job finished until I have measured it: the airflow, the temperature the system produces, and the safety checks on any gas equipment.
I Explain It.
I tell you what I did and why, what to watch for, and when I would suggest I look at it again. You get the paperwork and the warranty details in writing.
Living With It
What You Will Notice.
- Some Noise.
- Tools and a bit of banging around the equipment, mostly in one area of the home.
- What I Will Do: I keep the noisy work to that area and as short as I can.
- Heat and Power Off for a While.
- For a replacement, the system and sometimes the gas or power are off while I work.
- What I Will Do: I tell you when it will happen and for how long before I shut anything off, and I plan the work to keep it as short as I can.
- Some Mess.
- Any repair or replacement brings tools, boots and old parts through the home.
- What I Will Do: Floors are covered and boots are protected, and I clean up as I go and at the end. Your home should look like I was never there, apart from the new equipment.
- Your Household.
- Children, pets and a working day all matter, and a visit can cut across all three.
- What I Will Do: Tell me what your day looks like and I plan around it, so the work fits the household and not the other way around.
Your Choices
You Choose What Matters Most.
The same heating problem can be solved in different ways. Here is how I think about it, and what each choice costs you.
If Time Matters Most
Get You Warm Today.
I repair it now if I have the part, or give you a safe way to get through the night if I have to order one.
The Tradeoffs: A quick fix may not address why it failed, and I will tell you if I think it will fail again.
If Budget Matters Most
Spend as Little as Makes Sense.
I repair what failed, and I tell you honestly what else on that equipment is likely to follow, so there are no surprises later.
The Tradeoffs: Older equipment may need more repairs over time. You decide when to stop repairing.
If the Result Matters Most
Do It Properly, Once.
A replacement sized by measurement, with the ducts checked and the plan shown to you first.
The Tradeoffs: A larger cost today, and a little more time to plan and order.
Afterward
When We Are Done.
Paperwork You Can Keep.
What was done, what it cost, the warranty terms, and the model and serial numbers, all in writing.
A Check-In.
I follow up after a few days to make sure it is working and you are comfortable.
A Plan for Next Time.
I will tell you when I suggest I look at it again, and what a yearly visit would do for it. There is no pressure.
On Every Job
What I Promise, Whatever We Choose.
A Written Price Before Work Starts.
You will know what is included and what it costs before I begin. If something changes while I am working, I stop, call you, and explain before anything else happens.
Every Option, With Its Cost.
Time, money and the result are all real costs. I show you what each choice trades, so you decide with the full picture.
An Honest Answer, Even “No.”
If a repair is enough, I will say so. If nothing is needed, I will say that too.
What I Would Do at Home.
If you ask, I will tell you what I would choose for my own family, and why.
Care for Your Home and Family.
Floors protected, work areas kept tidy, and the day planned around the household that lives there.
A Note From David
When heating is the problem, you usually want two things: to be warm, and to know what you are dealing with. I start with both.
Nothing here is a script. It is how I would want someone to treat my own home, and it is the standard I hold myself to.
Questions
Questions People Ask.
My Furnace Stopped Working. What Should I Do First?
If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, leave the home and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Otherwise, call me any time and I will walk you through what to check and get help to you.
Will You Try to Sell Me a New Furnace?
Only if it is truly the better answer, and I will show you why. If a repair makes sense, that is what I will recommend.
Do You Repair Any Brand?
Yes. I am not tied to one manufacturer, so I recommend what fits your home, not what a company requires.
How Much Will It Cost?
It depends on what I find. You get a written price before I begin, and I explain every option, including the cheapest one that is safe.
Ready to Talk It Through?
A consultation is a conversation about how your home is behaving, not a sales pitch.
